AI SEO Guide 2026: How to Get Your Business Found in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews

AI answers now sit above many search results. Here is how Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini find websites, and a 7-step checklist to help them find yours.

AI SEO guide 2026: get found in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI

More people now get answers from AI before they click a website. Google shows AI Overviews at the top of many searches, including in the Middle East and in Arabic since May 2025. Many people also ask ChatGPT and Gemini to recommend products, services and companies.

For a business, the question has changed from “Do we rank on Google?” to “Do AI answers mention us and link to us?” The good news: you do not need secret tricks. AI search tools still rely on websites that are easy to crawl, clearly written and trusted.

This guide explains how the main AI search tools find websites, then gives a practical 7-step checklist you can work through, whether you do it yourself or with an SEO partner.

How AI search tools find websites

AI tool Where its web answers come from What it means for you
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Pages in Google’s normal search index that are eligible to show a snippet Normal SEO is the entry ticket. Google says no extra technical requirements, special files or schema are needed.
ChatGPT search Websites crawled by OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot If your site blocks OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
Gemini Google’s AI assistant Being well indexed and trusted in Google Search is the best foundation.

Two details matter here:

  • Search and training are separate. OpenAI’s GPTBot collects content for training AI models; OAI-SearchBot decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search. You can allow search and still block training. Google offers a similar training control called Google-Extended.
  • AI traffic is already in your reports. Google counts visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console’s normal Performance report, under the “Web” search type.

The 7-step AI SEO checklist

  1. Let the right crawlers in. Check your robots.txt allows Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot. Also check that your hosting, CDN or security plugin is not blocking them by mistake; Google specifically warns about this. Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended.
  2. Make sure your pages are indexed. Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit your XML sitemap and use URL Inspection on your most important pages. A page that is not indexed cannot appear in AI Overviews.
  3. Answer real questions clearly. Use the questions your customers actually ask as headings, and answer each one in the first one or two sentences below it. Short, direct answers are easier for AI tools to quote and link to.
  4. Show real experience. Add specific examples, real projects and clear details about who you are: an About page, contact details and named case studies. Content that only repeats what every other site says gives AI tools no reason to choose you.
  5. Keep important content as text. Put key information in normal page text, not only inside images, sliders or PDFs, and support it with relevant images or videos.
  6. Use structured data that matches the page. Organization, Article, Breadcrumb and FAQ schema (for example through Rank Math) help search engines understand your content. Google’s rule: structured data must match what visitors can see on the page.
  7. Keep your business information consistent. Update your Google Business Profile, and use the same business name, website and contact details everywhere you are listed online.

Myths to ignore

  • “You need a special AI file.” Google says no new machine-readable files or AI text files are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. llms.txt is a proposed format, not an official standard; adding one does no harm, but it is not a ranking requirement.
  • “You need special AI schema.” Google says no special schema.org markup is needed. Normal, accurate structured data is enough.
  • “AI SEO replaces normal SEO.” The same basics decide both: crawlable pages, clear content, good page experience and trust.
  • “Someone can guarantee you a spot in ChatGPT.” No agency controls which sources AI tools choose. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings.

How to measure your results

  • Google Search Console: clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report (search type “Web”). Watch impressions and clicks for your key pages month by month.
  • Google Analytics: check referral traffic from AI tools such as chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com.
  • Simple manual checks: once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google the questions your customers ask, and note whether your business is mentioned or linked.

FAQ

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO means making your website easy for AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Gemini to find, understand and cite. It builds on normal SEO rather than replacing it.

Does my business need to do anything special to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No special markup or file is required. According to Google, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search. Clear, helpful, well-structured content gives it the best chance.

How do I make sure ChatGPT can find my website?

Allow OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in your robots.txt and make sure your hosting or CDN does not block it. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.

Can I stop AI tools training on my content but still appear in AI search?

Yes. Block training crawlers such as GPTBot (OpenAI) or Google-Extended (Google) while still allowing the search crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot.

How long does AI SEO take?

The same as normal SEO: usually months rather than weeks, depending on your site, your competitors and how often you publish useful content.

Final thoughts

AI search rewards the same things good SEO always has: a site that is easy to crawl, content that answers real questions and proof that you know your subject. Start with steps 1 and 2 of the checklist today; they take less than an hour and remove the most common blockers.
